Almost every day, plane spotters gather at Imperial Hill in El Segundo, California, to watch jets take off and land at LAX.

Avid spotters are methodical and diligent in following the strict sequence of actions required to record each plane they see. However, while the procedures the spotters follow are similar, the reasons they fell in love with this hobby are all over the place.

Aerochannel’s Katie O’Brien returned to Imperial Hill for her final episode on plane spotting.

Plane spotters have been observing aircraft since the 1920’s. During World War Two, citizens in Britain were encouraged to become members of the Royal Observer Corps to help spot enemy aircraft in the skies over England.

Plane spotting became even more popular after the war and grew exponentially with the advent of the internet and the introduction of new digital cameras.

Today spotters travel long distances to photograph specific planes. Most spotters find premium locations near major commercial airports to observe the jetliners and log their registration numbers.

Military air shows usually draw large numbers of spotters. During the first weekend in October, hundreds converged on San Diego, California to attend the annual Miramar Air Show.

Some of the spotters who flew in for the event visited several popular spots at LAX, which is considered to be one of the premier sites in the nation for snapping the best pictures.

Aerochannel’s Katie O’Brien visited the three popular locations which plane spotters frequent to snap their photos of jets flying in and out of LAX.

LAX’s Complicated Rental Car System

June 4, 2010 — 8:43 am PDT
Updated June 14, 2010 — 11:12 am PDT

By Darren M. Popik

After spending countless hours at LAX, AeroChannel has noticed that one area that needs improvement at the bustling airport is the rental car system.

LAX officials have addressed this problem, and are seeking approval on a plan to build a consolidated rental car center, much like ones found at airports in Las Vegas and Phoenix.

But it will take years before a new rental facility becomes reality.

In the meantime, America’s number one origin and destination airport has what is arguably one of the worst rental car setups of any major airport.

AeroChannel’s Darren Popik explains why in the video above.
