Southwest Airlines is celebrating its 39th birthday with a new fare sale.
One-way tickets on trips of up to 450 miles are going for $39, while flights between 451 and 1,000 miles are going for $79, and those of more than 1,000 miles can be had for $119.

Heads on a Plane

A Southwest Airlines employee made an unsettling discovery at Arkansas’ Little Rock National Airport.
A shipment of 40 to 60 human heads.
After the worker found the box with the heads last week, the company called local authorities to investigate.

A low-cost carrier that’s been flying for just 10 years has quickly managed to cement itself as the top U.S. brand when it comes to “social currency”, according to a new study.
The report, Social Currency: Why Brands Need to Build and Nurture Social Currency, says that JetBlue is the top dog among U.S. companies.
The report, by Vivald-iPartners, says “social currency” is the extent to which people share the brand or information about the brand as part of their everyday social lives at work or at home.

Fair warning: If you collect frequent flyer miles in the hopes of exchanging them for free tickets, you better choose your airline carefully.
As airlines have cut flights, and the total number of seats they fly, the number of seats available for award travel has also declined.
But as the Wall Street Journal reports, award availability also varies considerably depending on the airline. Among U.S. carriers, your best chances for success are with Southwest Airlines or Alaska Airlines, says consulting firm IdeaWorks.
Southwest Looks to the South

Southwest Airlines is about to cover more territory in the South.
The low-cost carrier has announced plans to add two South Carolina airports to its network: Charleston International and Greenville-Spartanburg International.
Charleston has been trying to lure Southwest to the city, and the state has been considering legislation to provide financial incentives to get more air service.

The biggest airline at Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport is making a sizable cut to the number of flights it offers at the LA-area airport.
Southwest Airlines plans to cut 12 percent of its weekly flights at the airport by September.
Southwest is the dominant carrier at Bob Hope Airport, responsible for about two-thirds of the airport’s commercial flights. The carrier flies to five destinations from Burbank: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Sacramento, Oakland, and San Jose.

A near miss between a Southwest Airlines jet and a Cessna single engine aircraft has prompted a full investigation into the incident that took place at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank earlier this week.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, on Monday a Southwest Boeing 737 had just landed from Oakland shortly before 11 a.m. with 124 people on board.
