United-Continental Merger: Red Flags at 17 Airports

A new report suggests that federal regulators may see “red flags” when considering the merger between United and Continental Airlines.
The report from Cambridge Aviation Research suggests that the concerns may come from that fact that the new airline would have too high a market concentration at 17 airports, including LAX.
Delta Beefing Up Operations at LAX, Adding New Flights

The world’s biggest airline is beefing up service in Los Angeles, adding four new routes from the nation’s third busiest airport.
Beginning June 10, Delta Air Lines will offer non-stop service from LAX to Columbus, Ohio; Hartford, Conn.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and San Francisco.
It’s part of an effort by the airline to boost LA as its gateway for trans-Pacific service.
“Los Angeles’ strategic position in the Delta network continues to gain importance as we expand opportunities for customers to connect to our trans-Pacific services from this growing, thriving gateway,” says Glen Hauenstein, Delta Executive Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management.
Chronically Delayed Flights: The Worst of the Worst

When it comes to flight delays, New York City airports tend to get a lot of attention.
But if you want to avoid the worst flights, then you might want to think twice about flying out of San Francisco International Airport.
The most recent list of “chronically delayed flights” from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows that the 15 worst flights in the U.S. in January – and 28 of the top 30 – all flew into or out of SFO.
Virgin America Adds Orlando, Toronto – and More Cities Coming Soon

Virgin America is announcing the addition of two new cities to its system this year, and there are more destinations on the way.
In August, the airline launches daily service to Orlando from both San Francisco and Los Angeles.
And pending regulatory approval, new flights to Toronto will begin in June. The carrier will also fly to Toronto from both SFO and LAX.
Atlanta Retains Title as World's Busiest Airport

The airport that’s home to the world’s largest carrier also remains as the world’s busiest airport.
Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International is still in the number one position, with 88.0 million passengers in 2009. Despite a 2.3 percent drop in passengers from 2008, Atlanta remains far ahead of the second-place airport, London Heathrow, which was used by 66.0 million passengers.
Making big moves up the list was Beijing. The airport saw a whopping 16.8 percent increase in passengers, taking it to the number three spot.

Los Angeles International Airport gets more than its fair share of attention in the press. It’s one of the world’s busiest airports, and on top of that, it’s the number one airport for paparazzi on the lookout for celebrities.
But LAX, like comedian Rodney Dangerfield, often fails to get much respect. Travelers often knock LAX for its congestion, long lines, difficulty of navigation, and a lack of amenities found at many other airports.
New York-JFK Runway Closure Likely to Result in More Delays

The next four months will likely bring more headaches to travelers using New York’s JFK airport.
The main runway at the busy airport has been closed, and will remain closed through the end of June, while resurfacing work is done.
The move leaves three runways in use, but it’s expected to result in increased delays at an airport that already sees significant delays. JFK usually ranks among the worst U.S. airports when it comes to flight delays.
