(Los Angeles, California – November 14, 2012)  Los Angeles International Airport officials forecast that over 1.792 million passengers will pass through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) this Thanksgiving, a modest increase of 0.3 percent over last Thanksgiving’s 1.786 million passenger level.  Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 25 – and NOT the traditional day before Thanksgiving — is expected to be the busiest day of the holiday travel period.  Other busy days are expected to be the beginning and end of the 10-day travel period, Friday, November 16,and Monday, November 26, respectively.

According to on-line travel agency Orbitz Worldwide, LAX will be second to Chicago-O’Hare International Airport in terms of the number of passengers this Thanksgiving.  This means passengers should expect to see busy terminals and many domestic flights 90 percent full.  Passengers on flights between LAX and cities that are traditionally popular with Southern Californians — such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York and Boston – may find those flights fully booked.

Aviation Safety Update: FAA, Airlines to Share Info with NTSB

November 8, 2012 — 2:26 pm PST

By AeroChannel Staff

WASHINGTON – According the FAA, the Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airlines and aviation labor unions today announced a partnership with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to share summarized safety information that could help prevent accidents.

The information, shared through an initiative called the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) Executive Board, will help the NTSB determine if an accident is a unique event or an indication of systemic risks. Under ASIAS, airlines and unions already voluntarily share safety information with FAA to identify trends.

“The nation’s impressive safety record is in part due to an unwavering commitment by government and industry to work together to monitor data and identify trends to prevent accidents,” said FAA Acting Administrator Michael Huerta. “More than 90 percent of air carriers use voluntary reporting programs and this has led to significant training, operational and maintenance program improvements.”

“I am grateful to the FAA, industry and labor for their leadership,’’ said Deborah A.P. Hersman, NTSB chairman. “Better information leads to better investigations.”

“The U.S. aviation industry’s commitment to sharing safety information has already successfully helped us lower the fatality risk on commercial flights,” said Captain Paul Morell, Vice President, Safety, Security and Environmental Programs, US Airways and ASIAS Executive Board co-chair. “Through ASIAS, we know that industry and government are investing in the right safety solutions.”

The following is a press release issued by LAX:

Impacts To Begin Tuesday, June 5 and Last Over Two Years

(Los Angeles, California – June 1, 2012)  Beginning Tuesday, June 5, the first of several temporary lane closures will take effect within the Central Terminal Area roadways at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) — marking the start of vehicular traffic impacts expected over the next two years from various construction projects that are part of the current $4.1-billion LAneXt™ airport modernization program.  Passengers, motorists, airport workers and vendors should plan accordingly and allow more time to get to/from LAX.  Up-to-date construction traffic alerts related to LAneXt™ can be found at www.la-next.com and at LAX’s social media sites at www.Twitter.com/LAX_Official and www.Facebook.com/LAInternationalAirport.

The following Central Terminal Area roadway and pedestrian alerts will begin at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, and end as noted:

The three curving inner lanes on the Lower/Arrivals Level between the west end of Terminal 3 to the north end of the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) will be closed to traffic. Motorists at Terminal 3 will be required to leave the inner lanes via the exit lane on the west end of the terminal.  They can enter the inner lanes to pick up TBIT passengers via the entry lane on the north end of TBIT.  Pedestrians can still access the sidewalk around a construction barrier wall.  Taxi cab and shared-ride van (Prime Time and SuperShuttle) services that normally operate at this location will be temporarily suspended.  Terminal 3 passengers looking for taxis and shared-ride vans will be directed to Terminal 2.  All other types of public ground transportation that stop at the islands in front of each terminal are not affected.

FAA Funding Commentary

August 4, 2011 — 12:02 pm PDT

By AeroChannel Staff

By now, the story of the continued inability of Congress to approve the FAA’s budget is familiar to most Americans.  What’s sad is that, regardless of your feelings about funding for rural airports, the insistence by some members of Congress (in this case, Republicans) to hold the agency’s budget hostage over a relatively paltry $16.6 million in subsidies that are part of a $58 BILLION dollar budget has already caused more harm than the $16.6 million.  The government (ie: the taxpayers) is losing $25 million per DAY in tax revenue that cannot be collected without the funding provisions in place; 70,000 private construction workers are out of work, or at risk of being out of work; and 4,000 plus FAA workers are on furlough – while others are being asked to work without pay.  So, the government is losing tax revenue generated from 1) airport usage fees, 2) taxes paid by private sector employees, 3) taxes paid by government employees, 4) a likelihood of reduced tax revenue from private employers, and 5) reduced tax revenue from businesses where those 75,000 people might have spent their hard-earned money.

The LA “carmaggedon” $4 JetBlue Burbank to Long Beach flight that wound up as a match between cyclists and plane went to the bikes!  Actually, given how LA residents have avoided the roads on Saturday – it probably could have easily gone to the cars.  In fact, a “team” taking …

Updated July 14, 2011 — 12:07 pm PDT

According to LAX, the FlyAway ® nonstop bus service at Van Nuys and Westwood will be modified during this weekend’s I-405 freeway closure to consolidate passengers, improve the efficiency of each bus trip, and contribute to the overall traffic-management goal of reducing the number of vehicle trips on the region’s freeways and roadways.  The FlyAway® service at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and at Irvine Station in Orange County will operate on normal schedules (traffic permitting).

JetBlue’s offer to help Angelenos traverse the 405 closure turned out to be very popular.  The two $4 flights are sold out according to JetBlue.

JetBlue's Website

According to JetBlue – their intent was a noble one: “We’re helping Angelenos get over the gridlock altogether and enjoy the Valley or the beach, their favorite soccer match or a food festival, without having to brave the traffic jams to get there,” said Mark Rogers, JetBlue’s L.A. marketing manager.  Of course, you’d still have to go through security – and have transportation at the other end.  Now, JetBlue may owe a marketing consulting fee to the LA Times’ Steve Lopez whose Tuesday column about the 405 closure included a whimsical reference to JetBlue competitor Southwest offering Burbank-LAX service where “the weekend’s fares will range from $19 to
