The LA “carmaggedon” $4 JetBlue Burbank to Long Beach flight that wound up as a match between cyclists and plane went to the bikes! Actually, given how LA residents have avoided the roads on Saturday – it probably could have easily gone to the cars. In fact, a “team” taking …
Food & Drinks on Planes, Part I: The Free Stuff
June 16, 2010 — 2:32 pm PDT
Updated June 16, 2010 — 2:58 pm PDT
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, major U.S. carriers spent $3.67 per passenger on food in 2009, compared to $4.77 in 1999.
That may come as a surprise to many flyers, who have seen complimentary meals on planes disappear over the past decade. Airlines still spent $3.67? On what?
Meal service has been downgraded in many cases to nothing more than beverage service for economy-class flyers. It’s only those in the first-class and business-class cabins that still get free food. For everyone else, it’s basically buy-on-board food.

The Strategy Behind Airport Concessions
May 24, 2010 — 2:16 pm PDT
Updated May 24, 2010 — 2:17 pm PDT
Airport concessions represent a challenge to both the best airports and best retailers. Consider the dilemma:
Given a limited terminal space:
Aim for sky high rents to lower airlines costs, or low rents to give consumers a break?
Opt for high end food/restaurants, or the ever popular fast food joints?
Go with big name chains, or bring in local businesses?
Emphasize merchandise or restaurants?
Give the tenant airlines a voice, or make all decisions by the airport?
76-Year Old Airline Unionization Rule Overturned
May 10, 2010 — 2:01 pm PDT
Updated May 10, 2010 — 4:08 pm PDT
A decades-old rule is being thrown out by the National Mediation Board, as it changes the rules for unionization in the airline industry.
The board is overturning a 76-year-old rule that required the votes of the majority of workers for a unionization drive to succeed.
Now, union organizers will instead require a simple majority of airline employees who cast ballots.
It’s a move that was expected after the Obama administration gave the panel a 2 to 1 Democratic majority last year. But the changing the long-standing rule has many within the airline industry crying foul.
