Terrorist Attempts to Bring Down US Jetliner

A Nigerian man is in custody after his failed attempt to bring down a commercial jetliner by igniting an explosive device as the plane was on final approach to land in Detroit, Michigan. The Christmas Day terrorist attack occurred on a Delta/Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
The terrorist was quickly subdued after he tried to detonate a device that was strapped to his leg. The Airbus A330 landed safely in Detroit. The suspect later told investigators that he was trying to blow up the jetliner and had affiliations with al Qaeda, according to a senior U.S. official. Investigators are still trying to determine if the Nigerian man was acting alone. Airline officials say the jet was carrying 278 passengers when the incident occurred.
