Executives at U.S. airlines are feeling more confident, as they see improved and accelerating gains in the business travel market.
It’s an important market for air carriers, as those passengers are the ones who tend to book the pricier first- and business-class tickets, as well as the more flexible full-fare economy tickets.
Speaking at an industry conference Tuesday, Delta president Ed Bastian noted a big rise in corporate revenues at his airline. In the first five months of this year, Delta saw an uptick in corporate sales of 63 percent over the first five months of 2009.

As Continental and United Airlines executives work to hammer out the details in their merger, there’s growing talk that the next merger will be between American Airlines and US Airways.
Why, you ask? Because the other big players have already merged. There’s nobody left. And apparently merging is the “in” thing to do in the airline industry these days.

Updated May 13, 2010 — 10:24 am PDT
Fair warning: If you collect frequent flyer miles in the hopes of exchanging them for free tickets, you better choose your airline carefully.
As airlines have cut flights, and the total number of seats they fly, the number of seats available for award travel has also declined.
But as the Wall Street Journal reports, award availability also varies considerably depending on the airline. Among U.S. carriers, your best chances for success are with Southwest Airlines or Alaska Airlines, says consulting firm IdeaWorks.

How does an airline lose a dog? One couple would like to know.
As was first reported in The Consumerist, Josiah Allen and Erin Docking picked up a stray dog while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta two weeks ago.
They believed the dog to be a cross between a Dachshund and Jack Russell terrier.
After taking the dog in, who they named “Paco”, and taking him to the vet to get checked out, they prepared to take him home with them on their return flight to Detroit on May 3.

May 10, 2010 — 2:01 pm PDT
Updated May 10, 2010 — 4:08 pm PDT
A decades-old rule is being thrown out by the National Mediation Board, as it changes the rules for unionization in the airline industry.
The board is overturning a 76-year-old rule that required the votes of the majority of workers for a unionization drive to succeed.
Now, union organizers will instead require a simple majority of airline employees who cast ballots.
It’s a move that was expected after the Obama administration gave the panel a 2 to 1 Democratic majority last year. But the changing the long-standing rule has many within the airline industry crying foul.
