Bob Hope Airport Celebrates 80th Anniversary

There’s a party today at a Los Angeles area airport named after one of the world’s most beloved comedians.
The event? The 80th anniversary celebration at Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport.
For visitors interested in aviation history, the airport has set up a big tent by the airport’s valet parking center, featuring a historical photo display.
Special ceremonies are scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The biggest airline at Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport is making a sizable cut to the number of flights it offers at the LA-area airport.
Southwest Airlines plans to cut 12 percent of its weekly flights at the airport by September.
Southwest is the dominant carrier at Bob Hope Airport, responsible for about two-thirds of the airport’s commercial flights. The carrier flies to five destinations from Burbank: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Sacramento, Oakland, and San Jose.
Southwest Jet Involved in Close Call at Bob Hope Airport

A near miss between a Southwest Airlines jet and a Cessna single engine aircraft has prompted a full investigation into the incident that took place at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank earlier this week.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, on Monday a Southwest Boeing 737 had just landed from Oakland shortly before 11 a.m. with 124 people on board.
JetBlue Adds Flights at LAX

There’s good news for LA and New York travelers who prefer to fly with JetBlue.
The airline is doubling its flights from Los Angeles International Airport to New York-JFK. Beginning July 1, there will be four daily non-stops between the two gateway airports.
JetBlue initially set up its main base of operations in the Los Angeles area at Long Beach Airport, and also offers service from Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport.

Travelers can expect to encounter bigger crowds this Christmas travel season at Los Angeles’ two biggest airports.
LAX
At Los Angeles International Airport, officials are expecting some 2.4 million travelers to pass through LAX in the two-week holiday period between Saturday, December 19 and Saturday January 2.
That would mark a 1.9 percent increase over last year’s numbers.
The busiest days are forecast to be the three days prior to Christmas, and January 2.

If you’ve ever lived near an airport, you know that noise can be a major issue. The noise from jet engines and the vibration you feel as your home shakes from passing aircraft can be more than just a minor annoyance.
Balancing the needs of airports and their customers with those of residents living near airports is a tricky issue for communities across the nation.
In the Los Angeles area, there has been no shortage of conflict over the issue. With Los Angeles International Airport, plus four other commercial airports and about a dozen general aviation facilities serving the metropolitan area, the number of people affected can be considerable.

Is it economically viable – and realistic — for a city to have commercial airline service at five different airports?
That’s a question that could be asked about Los Angeles.
The greater LA area is served by LAX, John Wayne (OrangeCounty), Bob Hope (Burbank), Ontario, and Long Beach airports. (A sixth airport, Palmdale, briefly had commercial service, until United Airlines pulled out of the airport earlier this year.)
